As a member of the general public where
could you see all scales and types of radio controlled cars from oval,
circuit and off road in action in the space of one hour, and as a radio
controlled car racer be watched by thousands of spectators? The answer
of course was at the BRCA track at the Autosport Show at the NEC
Birmingham on January 13/14th.
The carpet track was the focus of attention for the
leading drivers from most Sections as they demonstrated their skills to
the vast crowds, showed them their cars and chatted to them. The track
was particularly suited to the electric powered cars which were able to
demonstrate the power, speed and handling to the full with close
racing. This applied to all classes, but especially the Oval and
Circuit; the Offroad no doubt wishing the track was not so flat! A
carpet indoor track, and one that was not that large, was not ideal for
the i.c. powered cars, but again all managed to put on an excellent show
despite the conditions, though it did seem to suit the 1/8th
stockcars when in the “oval” configuration. Even the Large Scale cars
were present, a couple from the Circuit, Offroad and TopStox did some
slow demonstration laps impressing the crowds.
In between the action from the drivers there was a
chance for the general public to have a go, some of whom showed
remarkable skill after only a few laps, not to mention the occasional
visit of some “dolly birds” for the odd photo shoot (see photos) to add
a bit of glamour, and the antics of resident “stunt man” Dez “the mad”
Chand.
Thanks go to all drivers who took part, the Bikes were
missing from the action as the track was not suitable, but they will be
in action at the Superbike Show at Alexandra Palace on January 26 to 28th,
so go and see them there.
Special thanks must go to Jim Spencer and Andy Nash for
their efforts in getting us all there, Gareth Bevans for manning Race
Control, Kris Kennedy for keeping the crowd informed, entertained etc on
the PA and the “set up crew” (you know who you are) for their efforts on
Thursday and Friday to ensure all was in place for Saturday morning.
Hope to see you all next year.
