A Name is just a Name?

A thought for clubs to ponder..

Is the name of the club important, should it let people know what you do and where you are or is it just a title for the sake of it? Quite recently we’ve seen a rise in clubs with names that fall under the ‘unusual’ bracket and oddly a rise in enquiries where people have quite spectacularly failed to find a club right on their doorstep, odd that isn’t it?

While popular culture makes the old fashioned “ ‘Insert town name’ Model Car Club,” look a bit past it, it does achieve a couple of important things in that anybody reading it knows where you are and roughly what you do? Does the “Max Mayhem Extreme” or the “Tarmac Terrors” style actually achieve anything? The normal argument is that it’s to portray a more laid back attitude, a bit more modern, and all of this is great. But only if potential newcomers can find you in the first place, so your promotion has now got to be ramped up to compensate which kind of defeats the ‘laid back’ point in the first place.

Now none of this is saying, “don’t do it.” what it is saying is “think about what you want to achieve.” Projecting a modern fresh image may just be more about attitude and enthusiasm than just the club name itself? Lastly please do check that somebody else hasn’t beaten you too it, just recently we’ve had to ask a couple of clubs to have a re-think, hope they hadn’t already got club logo’s sorted out!
