Race report round six - Brooklands

27/11/2006

Round six of the series championship saw us at the Brookland Raceway in Kent. Saturdays practice was held in warm sunny weather that saw the track in use from early morning to late evening. As has become the norm this year yet again we had an absolute hatful of cars who all seemed capable of negotiating the Brookland track in very similar times, The upshot being that Sundays racing looked yet again as though it was going to be close.

Drivers started arriving trackside Sunday from about seven o’clock and by eight thirty the pits were busy. Race director for the weekend Dennis Paul  had the meeting underway by mid morning and almost from the off we had a hatful of twenty lap heats and by the later heats twenty one’s were on the board. Round two was to set the standard and by now it was clear that only a twenty one lap heat would guarantee an open final spot, and even at this early stage we already had five drivers with 21’s on the board heat three saw Round three saw everyone up the anti culminating in Andy north securing his first ever 1/8th FTD with a sparkling 21/300.87, he couldn’t be too complacent though as behind him were a hatful of drivers. Round four saw Andy hang on to his FTD as no one could better his time but it wasn’t for a lack of trying and behind him we had at least four or five drivers only a click behind.

The Open final was a fraught race as runaway leader Mark Green’s 960 coasted to a halt just after half distance with engine problems, two laps later new leader Gareth Bell was out. And joined one time third place driver Michael Kerr in the pits. Neil Diver was now in front but being caught by Jason Frost, Jason pushed through to the front at the last round of pit stops and held on for his first ever open final win. The results being as follows

  1. Jason Frost  Serpent 950  117 laps

  2. Neil Diver     Mugen MRX4 116 laps

  3. Pete Hastings Mugen MRX4 112 laps

Jason takes his first win, doesn't Neil look pleased

The other finals were as follows

  • A final  Scott Nettleton

  • B final  Charles Wright
