Second round of the championship - Wombwell

27/11/2006

The second round of the championship was at the Wombwell circuit in south Yorkshire. With another entry just short of sixty drivers one day racing really seems to be catching on. Practice Saturday practice saw the circuit in use for most of the day. On the circuit we had a lot of cars all circulating in about the same time so the prospect of close qualifying on Sunday was a definite possibility.

Thankfully the promised persistent rain gave us a miss and we were treated to a bright warm sunny day. As expected from the off qualifying was going to be close and the loss of a couple of seconds in your qualifying run could and often did prove costly. The new section of track alongside the timing hut now means that a fast 16 or 17 lap heat would be needed to secure a place in the open. Looking at the qualifying times after the second round the gap between half way up the A final and half way down the B was under two seconds.

Mark Green proved to be the class of the field and sowed up FTD for the day. Mark used his pole position advantage to good effect blasting off at the start for a flag to flag victory. The result of the open being.

  • Mark Green   98 laps   Serpent 950R

  • Neil Diver     95laps   Mugen MRX4

  • Ben Kelsall   94laps    Kyosho Evolka

Many of the lower finals were just as keenly contested with the first three in the B final and the E final finishing on the same lap

Winners of the other finals were

  • A final             Andy North

  • B final             Lee Woodburn

  • C final             Pete Watt

  • D final             Adam Darcy

  • E final             John Russell
