Brooklands  Q&A

27/11/2006

Question. We started to run the finals based on a set of results we had and then abandoned the finals due to the timing system not working, so why can we not use those qualifying positions to award points?

Response.Yes we had some results. We knew we had problems with specific drivers times, in that we could not 100% accurately figure out their finishing time but we were sure we had enough information to put everyone in the correct final. Therefore the specific drivers affected agreed to accept those results, only if they could run the final and therefore get a fair chance to improve their results. Because we did not run the finals we cannot use these results.

Question. Surely we have lap times so its easy to reconstruct the overall qualifying times?

Response Dennis and Scott have spent days trying to ensure we have accurate times. However because in a lot of cases we did not get finishing times its impossible to get this right. It's not only the top drivers that are affected. Mostly its drivers in heats 3,4 and 5. Getting this wrong would have a serious consequence on the championship and of course for credibility sake we cannot guess the results.

Question. Why can we not use the results as of round two?

Response. On the day we stated there would be three rounds of qualifying. It would of course be grossly unfair and illegal to use only the first two rounds.

Question. But as in the first round at Mendip most drivers only got two rounds of qualifying ?

Response. Our rain rules are very specific and have nothing to do with this situation.

Question.Has this happened before and do we know what the problem was?

Response. No its never happened before. We (8th section) carry our own timing systems, however we plug into the circuits receiver that picks up the signal from the loop. After investigations Shane has found the rabbits had been at the loop that is normally under 3 feet of ground. This could not have been foreseen and at the time would not have been repairable even if we had found it. Brooklands have replaced this equipment already. Shane has offered all drivers who attended the meeting a 50% reduction in their race entery for the first round at Brooklands next year.

Question.Was there no other option?

Response. Unfortunately not. The committee understands the huge investments made by the racers who travel the country and this decision was not taken lightly. There is a lot at stake in our championship, not only for the top drivers but through out the field. In this case the only option was to have no results.
