Scottish Inter-Club Championship 2021 Round 2

RC News

Championship takes shape in Stonehaven with wins for Pole and O'Brien.

Sunday 18th July was the date of Round 2 of the Scottish Inter Club Championship (SICC). It was held at the Stonehaven & District Radio Car Club on their semi  permanent grass track which is laid out using hoses and concrete markings. It is bumpy and quite blown out in places with some man made jumps, a 25 metre straight/launching pad and a step - down!

In the days leading up to the event the weather had been reaching nearly 30 degrees at certain points during the day and there had been no rain which is unusual for the North East of Scotland however come Sunday morning it was damp, over cast and notably cooler than it had been the rest of that week. The change in weather however didn't seem to deter anyone as we still saw 67 entries across the 3 classes and competitors representing all 7 clubs in Scotland.

As open practice drew to a close, Ballistic Green's made way for Schumacher Yellow's, driver's took to the rostrum for Heat 1 and Peter Eagles took a seat in Race Control where he settled in for a day of commentating - Round 1 was underway!

Schumacher's Allan O'Brien went on to sweep both 2WD and 4WD qualifying very convincingly after the 3 rounds where he TQ'd each time. From 2nd place back in 4WD it was a different story with not much seperating David Scott and Daniel Pole. In 2WD David found himself a little further back than normal after an interference issue in Round 1 and a rough Round 2 would leave him 6th on the grid with Martin Inglis taking up P3. Euan McLeod and Steve Harley were the only other 2 drivers to make double A finals that day on a track that was constantly changing each run.

The first A Final on the line was for the 2WD class and it was won by Daniel Pole who took the lead on lap 2 and led the majority of the race to take the victory from Allan O'Brien in 2nd and Euan McLeod in 3rd. In the reverse grid 2nd leg David Scott would take full advantage of his 6th place which would now be 3rd and went on to lead lap 1 before dropping back to 3rd on lap 3 behind Daniel and Allan. David would go on to have a race long battle with fellow Schumacher driver Euan McLeod and Martin Inglis with the Kyosho. All three drivers would take a turn in 3rd place with the positions switching multiple times however it was Euan who went on to finish 3rd from David 4th and then Martin in 5th. Out front Daniel had once again managed to lead the majority of the 5 minutes and hold on to take the win with his B6.3D. This would secure him the overall win from Allan in 2nd and Euan 3rd.

In the 4WD finals Allan would take leg 1 leading every lap of the 5 minute final from Daniel Pole who overtook David Scott around the halfway point and didn't look back. Andrew Edwards had a very good run racing his way from 7th on the grid up to 4th. In the reverse grid second leg Andrew would once again come 4th, this time dropping back from his 2nd place grid spot. Martin Inglis came 3rd and out front Schumacher team mates David Scott and Allan O'Brien had a race long battle from the back of the grid to take 1st and 2nd respectively with David beating Allan by 7 seconds in the end to take the leg 2 win. This meant that overall Allan would finish 1st, David 2nd and Andrew 3rd. A rough second leg meant Daniel would drop out of the top 3 and finish 4th.
