2015 End Of Season Event Boughton – F3 – F4 – F5’S Done

1/10th Off Road

The Club and Track The Boughton Raceway in Boughton held an end of season finals event last year. They held a great meeting then so anticipation of another good event was obvious. Headed by Barry Abbott and his close Team, the track looked really good on arrival. Lovely to see a massive straight, everything manicured, painted, hoses all pinned nicely and a massive lovely rostrum. I walked up on the rostrum at this stage and thought, wow!! No doubt you could accommodate 20 drivers up here. Tough choice where to stand though.

The track all Astro-Turf but not of the type that is high grip. This would be interesting I thought! A very fast straight into a newly built banked corner, a hump that can be tricky if taken too quick a table top with a step down exit, into a fast chicane, over a couple of tricky low speed bumps (soon afterwards nicknamed, Pamela’s) and then on to a fast triple jump before a few corners with a hop type jump and back on the straight to complete a lap of the circuit. Sounds easy looked easy but to go fast maybe another question.

Organisers ready, drivers ready, so let’s race!

Paul Worsley our chairman had some different type of info to normal National stuff and everyone was listening beautifully through the briefing. These briefings are actually compulsory and everyone was in attendances! Keith Wardle, BRCA 10th secretary was present, the head time keeper Stuart Whyman as well as John Cockill the National head referee. Barry Abbott a very good racer himself was the race director.

Practice:

Practice commenced on a very damp track and with 2 practice session of 3 minutes for the 1st and 5 for the 2nd there was good time to learn the track layout.

Round 1

The weather looking good for the weekend we were off. OK – At Nationals I try and highlight drivers with local knowledge. Not so easy at End of Season events. I suppose Craig Maher would be a good one to pick out as last year he finished 2nd and this year he has moved on to get his F2 licence for next year. Last year’s winner Stuart Rand was racing too and he’s not too shabby either. Straight out the blocks was Steve Ibbotson running for Schumacher. Posted a time of 9/313.34 for everyone to chase in the last heat. Joseph Cockhill hasn’t run a 2wd car for some 3 years plus and decided to run the Evdoka machine for the day. Boy oh boy was he surprising some people! He was on to take some 3 seconds off Steve’s time but a last corner error cost him round 1 TQ by 0.44 of a sec. It’s all right, his Dad and head referee John Cockill nearly killed him (LOL – only joking) Joe took 2nd from Craig Maher 3rd. Paul Fox 4th and David Evans 5th.

Round 2

Steven Ibbotson was at it again. This time set a better time with the 1st 10 lap run of the day. Yes Boughton Raceway is a long track with lap time easily in the 30 plus sec per lap. This time a 10/331.59 averaging 33.17 secs per lap. Craig Maher had a better run and got ever so close with the only other 10 lap run. Just 0.9 behind, Craig took 2nd. Paul Fox took 3rd in round, 4th was Kevin Bishop and 5th was Felix De Hamel.

Round 3

Steve Ibbotson could sense he was in with a chance as he again set the pace. This time even faster on a 10/320.80. Paul Fox got close by 0.74 to take 2nd in round with Craig 3rd. 4th was Charlie Ware the Indoor Silverstone specialist () and 5th was Stuart Rand

Round 4

Well last round was upon us and things could change around very quickly as many had good low scores. With only 2 from 4 to count, it could be an interesting final. Steve Ibbotson with 3 zeros already secured Pole. He set a time of 10/332.70 but with many errors we knew it was going to be beat by someone in the last heat. A very close affair between Craig Maher running the Serpent car, Paul Fox running the Schumacher car, and Lee Romang running the Team C car. It was Maher, Fox, Romang, Cockill and Bishop that topped the final round.

Leg 1 A Main

Steve Ibbotson from pole got away. Craig Maher and Joe Cockill with the Serpent cars were in hot pursuit for the whole race. They swapped positions and all sorts. Joe set the fastest single lap in the process of catching but it was the Schumacher car of Ibbotson that took an exciting leg one from Craig 2nd and Joe 3rd. Paul was 4th, Kevin 5th, Lee 6th, Felix 7th, Neil 8th, Charlie 9th and Stuart dropped out and got 10th.

Leg 2 A Main

Ibbotson from pole got away again and was trying not to make an error. Paul Fox put in some hot laps but couldn’t make it happen. Steve got through on his victory lap to a well-deserved win of the F3/4/5s. The podium certainly not decided yet but Paul took 2nd, Stuart Rand 3rd, Lee Romang 4th and Craig 5th.

G Final was won by Jamie Robinson
F Final was won by Ian Ephraim
E Final was won by Matthew Keene
D Final was won by Paul Flinders
C Final was won by James Crockart
B Final was won by Dominic Nunn

Leg 3 A Main

A tough race this 3rd leg. Ibbotson had won the event so sat out and just watched with a big smile on his face. So many fast guys and so many wanting to win, it got a little rough. Racing is racing though and that is why we have referees. None other than Paul Worsley was reefing the A Finals as John rather not when his son is competing in the main A final. Mr Gurnell was also reefing for assistance so plenty of experienced eyes. Even I was watching but my eyes are not so good these days (LOL). Away they went and Craig had the lead. Paul Fox had a little nibble lets say, a few times lets say and at that stage there was no stop and go. Lee Romang from near last (9th) was in the mix. Craig was getting the worse of it all. Was it exciting? Yes it was! Close racing always is. They finished but some of the drivers were not happy. The referees were not happy so the result was in question. Paul won the final from Lee and Craig. No fast laps from any of them as like I said it was a scrappy affair. Suddenly we had word that a 5 sec penalty was granted for not listening to a stop and go given on the rostrum. Lee Romang was announced the winner of the last leg, with Rob 2nd and Craig 3rd. 4th was Neil Saunders from 10th and Joe was 5th. Below is the overall results of the event.

4wd Event – Sunday:

The Track

The track layout was totally changed for the 4wd event. When we came here last time a few people said there wasn’t a big change made for the 4wd event. Well after some 2 hours plus, the crew at Boughton made a massive change to the track. The weather looked really good too. Sunshine predicted….so with a trimmed down event due to some no shows and lower entry, let’s race!

Drivers briefing

Paul did the drivers briefing – No major differences from the day before.

Practice

Same as 2wd. 2 practice runs and we were off into round 1

Round 1

Ross Nicholson was to open up the round 1 TQ. Ross set a blistering time of 11/13.97 some near 6 secs ahead of Steve Ibbotson the 2wd winner the day before. Jack Angus 3rd, Lee Romang 4th and Dominic Nunn 5th

Round 2

Dominic Nunn set the fastest time of the day at this stage and took round 2. Ross Nicholson another good run to take 2nd and with that secure a high starting position for the A final. Felix De Hamel 3rd and Joe Cockill 4th with Lee Romang 5th.

Round 3

Ah were things changing now as Steve Ibbotson took round 3 with Stuart Rand making a good showing for 2nd. Paul Fox 3rd, Felix De Hamel 4th and John Myall a good 5th. Steven got close to the fastest time of the day but didn’t get it.
Round 4

So we have 3 people that can TQ. Dominic, Ross and Steven. A great battle developed for the TQ and the pole position. Dominic Nunn was to take the round and the pole. Ross Nicholson took 2nd and lined up 2nd. 3rd in round was Joe Cockill and 4th was Stuart Rand. 5th was Jack Angus. They lined up as follows for the final

Leg 1 A Main

Off they went and these guys might only be F3/4 and F5s but they are fast. The cars are fast too. The question was the triple jump though. There was a select few that could carry enough speed and jump the triple instead of double single like the majority of the field was doing. After a pore start Ross Nicholson was one of the cars that could jump the triple and to be totally fair, he practically could do it every time. Starting badly he jumped over a few cars but on and around the 7th lap, Ross did the unforgivable sin of jumping into Joe Cockill in mid-air. It didn’t need a commentator to tell Ross that it’s an instant 10sec penalty. It was crystal clear at drivers briefing. Ross retired his car but of course cost Joe his final too. Stuart Rand won the 1st leg from Paul Fox and Lee Romang all the way from 9th on the grid.

Leg 2 A Main

Well there were loads of apologies referencing leg 1 between the drivers which naturally is great to see. This time Ross was following and double single on the triple. Dominic sat in front for a long long time. Soaked up the pressure Ross was dishing out till the last lap when Ross pulled the trigger over the triple and executed the move to perfection. With that he took the lead and the win of leg 2. Dominic 2nd, Steve 3rd.

F Final was won by Dylan Calvert
E Final was won by Callum Akeroyd-Bench
D Final was won by Isaac McFadyean
C Final was won by Lee Hedges
B Final was won by Craig Maher

Leg 3 A Main

So the question was simple. Could Ross pull off the same miracle overtaking manoeuvre to win this event? Everyone tried to take the lead but Ross sat there, sat there and yes he could do it. One lap from the end again just pulled the trigger and boom! Took the lead and came in 1st to take the meeting and become F3/4/5 2015 champion. 2nd in the last leg was Paul Fox, 3rd was Steve Ibbotson. Full results below
