BRCA 10th Off Road Nationals Round 2 - TORCH

1/10th Off Road

Round 2 of the 2017 season saw the 10th Off Road section travelling to the south of the country and the Titchfield Off Road Club Hants (Torch), on arrival at the venue it was obvious to see the improvements that have been made in slightly under a 12 month period. The biggest improvement being the re-levelling of the main straight, using approximately 40 tonnes of aggregate to smooth out the nasty bumps that could cause cars to lose control in a straight line. The club had presented the venue fantastically with plenty of pitting space around the track perimeter and adjacent field.

2WD – Saturday

Qualifying brought variable weather conditions with Sun, wind and a little rain causing the drivers to have a challenging time, Neil Cragg, Lee Martin and Tom Yardy shared the honours for top spot in the first 3 rounds of qualifying with a win and second counting for each driver. In the fourth round it was Neil bringing the Associated car back home in the TQ spot, with Lee and Tom bringing their cars home in second and third respectively. The second event of the season also saw the third newcomer to the ‘A’ Final club with Adam Perei joining the list.

An increase in the number of junior drivers attending the national series this year has resulted in a more competitive junior award, Luke Holdsworth taking the Under 16 category after his placing at the back of the B Final and converting it into a fourth place finish, with Ben Smith snapping at his heels with a place in the C Final and claiming the Under 13 trophy, second place in the under 13’s went to Tommy Hall with Josh Holdsworth coming in Third. The formula trophies were awarded to Richie Thorn (F2), Charlie Ware (F3), Ross Nicholson (F4) and Robert Hatton (F5).

The first leg of the A Final, and Neil led the chasing pack for the early stages of the race until clipping a corner and being demoted to 3rd allowing Lee Martin to take the Yokomo into the lead from Tom Yardy. Some outstanding driving from Neil allowed him to close down and pass Tom, but the leg 1 win was taken by Lee, with Neil and Tom coming home in second and third. Leg 2 allowed Neil to gain an early advantage but a clip on one of the hoses let Lee through for the majority of the race until a roll at the end of the straight gave the lead back to Neil for the remainder of the race to take the win from Lee and Tom.   The final leg gave us the head to head between Neil and Lee as Tom could not achieve a score to bring the Schumacher car into the top spot. From the opening buzzer Neil lead but being forced to defend from the attacks from Lee in second, with the two contenders for the win pulling away from the rest of the field it was Neil coming home in first place to confirm his second win in the national championship this year.

 4WD – Sunday

Sundays qualifying was dominated by the Yokomo of Lee Martin taking top spot in rounds 1 and 3 of qualifying, with Neil Cragg taking the 2nd round, meaning it was only Neil that could take TQ going in to round 4. Neil set the early round 4 pace narrowly missing out on a 14 lap run, however Lee responded with a 14 lap run to take the round. Tom Yardy secured third place overall with a 3rd in round to accompany the 2nd in round from round 1.

The junior awards once again went to Luke Holdsworth (Under 16) and Ben Smith (Under 13) both making it into the B Final, with Luke converting a 4th place start into 2nd place at the chequered flag, Ben was not quite so fortunate with a couple of mistakes demoting him to 10th. Second place in the Under 13’s again went to Tommy Hall, with Josh Holdsworth coming in third. Ben Smith also claimed the silverware for top F2, Nick Gurnell, Ross Nicholson and Joseph Cockill took the F3, F4 and F5 respectively.

In Leg 1 of the ‘A’ Final it was Lee setting the early pace, every time Neil closed the gap he was able to respond and maintain the gap. Lee was given a bit more breathing space following an error from Neil towards the end of the race that threw him well within the sights of third place man Tom Yardy who couldn’t find enough pace to close the gap to anything closer than a second. Leg 2 started in a similar fashion to the 1st leg with Lee taking the initial lead, Neil closed the gap down to a fraction of a second but tangled with the track markings allowing Lee breathing space at the front and the pursuing duo of Craig Collinson and Tom Yardy to close onto his tail. Neil began to close the gap on Lee and open the gap slightly on Craig, but another tangle with the track markers saw him being forced to successfully defend the second place from Craig for the duration of the race allowing Lee to bring home the leg 2 and overall win. Leg 3 saw a relative lack of pace from Lee and some un-characteristic mistakes giving Neil the opportunity to take the lead, further errors from Lee allowed Tom to come through into 2nd place with the finishing order of the final leg remaining in that order, securing 2nd and 3rd in the overalls for Neil and Tom respectively.
