Round 4 Welsh regionals race report from Saundersfoot Model Car Club

The 4th round of the Welsh regionals took place on Sunday 23rd July, the day had started with torrential rain as competitors headed down the M4 to the Saundersfoot Model Car Club who were hosting the event. Although the track was damp, by the time racing got under way all thought of rain had been forgotten as the sun came out to play.

Practice and the first round saw some cars struggling as the wet grass clung to the driveshafts and binding wheels, those with McDonald’s straws on the driveshafts had a slight advantage there! Whilst the usual suspects were topping the time sheet a few others took advantage of the conditions to post good times, especially a couple with rear motor 2wd, the old school motor layout working well on the old school track surface. Special mention goes to Dave Clutterbuck’s Tamiya Neo Fighter which managed to put down the power from it’s mighty 10.5 to get a 3rd in round.

By round 2 most drivers had switched from Ballistic greens to Schumacher yellows, but the still drying track caught a few out. However by round 3 however the grip levels were right up and the order chopped and changed as everyone improved. At the top of 2wd Chris Mills and Rob West were running away from the rest with Rob managing to keep his Schumacher KD ahead of Chris’s B6D but only just.

In 4wd Craig Harris’ X-ray XB4 carried on it’s habit of being faster than the rest, with Rob West’s CAT K2 being the fastest of the rest. In round 4 of qually, the very well behaved weather decided to throw some rain at the very last heat of 4wd, meaning that those who were counting on a good time in their last run were out on a slick grass track with the wrong tyres. This led to a few upsets and gave Tom Owen the chance to TQ that round with his Carisma 4XS, with Paul Knight’s 4XS in 2nd. The shower disappeared as quickly as it had arrived, leaving everyone to ponder what tyres would be best for their finals.

The finals were kicked off by the 2wd B, with a close battle between Owen Richards and Peter Mulcahy throughout the final, with pole man Owen triumphing at the end by just under a second. Alex Luke was a strong 3rd having swapped is camera for a transmitter (if you’ve not seen his photos of the day’s action, please check them out on either the WRCA or Saundersfoot MCC Facebook pages). A few seconds back 4th place was taken by Andrew Owen, with a tight battle between the rest of the field resulting in Kevin Fenrich bagging 5th ahead of Graham Thomas and Ian Sutcliffe. Craig Deakin was unfortunately unable to start due to breakage.

Onto the 2wd A final where Schumacher and Team Associated had divided the honours equally with just the Atomic Carbon CR2 and Tamiya Neo Fighter of local boys Tim Bullock & Dave Clutterbuck getting amongst the B6Ds and Cougar KDs. Whilst Rob West & Chris Mills continued their domination of the 2wd event (with Schumacher & Associated respectively) there was intense racing down the rest of the field with Mike Baldwin (B6D) having an unlucky first couple of laps, dropping him down the order, whilst Steve Curtis-Rich, Pete Belsten & Tim Bullock battling for 3rd. Tim Bullock CR2 won that battle, leaving Steve (KD) & Pete (B6D) to finish 4th & 5th. Adam Talbot (B6D) finished 6th ahead of the mighty Tamiya Neo Fighter of Dave Clutterbuck, then Craig McDonald (KD), Mike Baldwin (B6D) & Gav Gallagher (KD) taking the last positions.

Moving onto the chassis final 4wd, we had 4 U16 taking part again, with polesitter Conah Wren-Mapp taking victory from Graham Thomas, after having to retake the position following Graham’s better start. Will Owen was unchallenged in 3rd place after moving up from his 5th grid position. Michael Belsten and Ewan Mulcahy had a good battle for 4th & 5th, with Michael managing to get past for 4th place on the last lap. Tim Bullock was classified 6th after electing not to start following a day to forget in 4wd.

The 4wd B Final threw up some surprise entries with a few of the regular A finalists having had a bad day. Pole man Adam Talbot was displaced by Martyn Hadley, but held on to 2nd for a few laps until Chris Mills & Ieuan Payne got through in their battle to catch Martyn, seeing their positions swap a few times until Chris got clear and tried to hunt down Martyn’s K2 with his B64, the race ending just as he got within a second of him. This left Ieuan in 3rd, Adam 4th, ahead of the close battle for 5th of Andrew Curtis-Rich & John Toole. Ian Sutcliffe, Glyn Jessop, Geoff Mapp & Chris Morton rounded off the remaining positions.

The final race of the day was the A final 4wd and as has become the norm now, Craig Harris and his X-ray XB4 converted pole position into another win. With that he wrapped up the 4wd championship with maximum points in all 4 rounds, congratulations! Rob West finished 2nd just under a second ahead of this Schumacher team mate Spencer Farley in 3rd. Paul Knight finished 4th with his Carisma 4XS ahead of his fellow 4XS driver Tom Owen, but splitting them (& beating Tom by only 0.24 of a second) was the K2 of Steve Ireland. Dave Clutterbuck continued his run of A finals with uncommon cars by finishing 7th with a Hot Bodies D413! A pair of X-ray XB4s in the hands of Mike Baldwin and Liam Toole in 8th & 9th with Gav Gallagher’s cartwheeling CAT K2 taking the 10th position.

Another successful meeting from the Saundersfoot Club, who made us welcome for the 2nd time this season and we all look forward to to racing there again next year! A huge thank you to everyone who setup the track for us. Into August and the 5th round will be at COBRA at their track in Marshfield. Time for the championships to really take shape as people start dropping scores.

Let’s hope we continue being lucky with the weather!
