BRCA Rallycross Rd 3 - Brookthorpe

8th Rally X

The 3rd round of the BRCA 1/8th Rallycross nationals took place at the superb Brookthorpe track just outside of Gloucester. The track itself is an undulating oiled dirt track with technical sections and some big jumps.

The track looked amazing but it would be the weather that would play havoc with qualifying, with several showers during many of the rounds it would really mix things up! Some top drivers were also missing including Elliott Boots who was attending another event, so could Joni Skidmore get the win and make a charge for the championship.

A lot of drivers didn’t go out for their qualifying heats in the Wet rounds so these drivers were a little out of place until the final round of qualifying on Sunday morning but after 5 rounds it was Jamie Clancy and his Mugen that took TQ with young Sworkz driver Dylan Saunders 2nd with both William and Joni Skidmore 3rd and 4th with Callum Niblett and his Sworks taking 5th overall!

The B 1/4 was dominated by Darren Bloomfield and his AE machine. A stunning drive by young Sworkz driver Billy Grindley saw him take second place a couple of laps back from the previous British Champ Darren. In 3rd would be the Tekno of Daniel Austin after a great drive from the back of the pack in 11th on the grid for his 2nd bump up. 4th and final bump was the HB of Jon Spencer.

In the 1/4 final A side it was a great battle between the Sworkz of James Le Pavoux and the Xray of Freddie Thompson. The pair swapping places throughout the finals with Freddie managing to get the lead and a gap on James to take the win by 16s at the end of the 20min final. In 3rd and his 5th bump up of the day was Robson White! An amazing achievement by the Xray driver. 4th was taken by pole sitter Reuben Shakespeare and his Sworkz machine!

Pole sitter Dylan Saunders led the first couple of laps in the B side of the Semi finals, but then Joni Skidmore took the lead and that’s where he stayed crossing the line a lap up on the field as the buzzer went. A fantastic drive by bump up Man Darren Bloomfield saw him take 2nd from 11th on the grid! The Agama of Lewis Jones secured his place in the main by overtaking the pole man Dylan in the final stink securing his 3rd place with Dylan having to settle for 4th. The AE of Jamie Hall took 5th. A brilliant last lap pass by Simon Willetts and his Mugen saw his take 6th and the final main place went to the HB of Simon Reeves.

The A Side Semi final was a great battle between the pole sitter Jamie Clancy and 2nd on the grid Will Skidmore and his Xray machine. Jamie led the first part of the race with Will leading the later. The pair got the lap on the rest of the field with Will taking the win and Jamie 2nd. The remainder of the bump spots would be up for contention thought out the whole race. The ever consistent Graham Alsop and his HB machine secured his 3rd spot just after the half way point. Behind him Mitchel Booth and his Xray and Callum Niblett and his Sworks machine were having a great and close race, swapping positions a number of times, Callum got the spot late on and crossed the line 4th with Mitchel in 5th. The last spots were taken by bump up drivers James Le Pavoux from 12th and Freddie Thompson from 11th.

So after all the rain effected qualifying and out of position drivers, the A main was not disappointing stacked with the best drivers in the UK. William Skidmore lined up pole with brother Joni behind him, but it didn’t take long for Joni to overtake his brother. Joni put on an amazing performance and eventually got a decent lead on the chasing pack. As the 45mins was up he was the clear winner even getting the lap on the rest of the field! A brilliant drive by the reigning champion. Graham Alsop once again opting for the long stop strategy took advantage of Will falling back down the pack, taking the 2nd spot once again by some gap from Jamie Clancy and his Mugen in 3rd. Sworks driver Callum Niblett also drove an amazing race getting the 4th just 15s off 3rd after the 45min final. The 5th spot was young Sworkz driver Dylan Saunders, from 11th on the grid, a stunning drive by the young man.

So another great race weekend, with the championships now hotting up going into the final 2 races of the season. Joni leads the national championship currently but with Boots missing this round it will go down to the last national of the year, the pressure will be on both drivers to secure TQ and win the remaining rounds. We can’t wait to see what happens.

Thanks to Brookthorpe club, the BRCA team and all the drivers for a great weekend of top quality racing despite the rain. The next round takes us to Herts in July where we hope to see more of the same.
